Play the legendary slide-and-merge number puzzle. Exercise your brain, slide matching tiles, and build the ultimate 2048 tile!
2048 Classic is the iconic mathematical sliding puzzle game created by Gabriele Cirulli in 2014. The game starts with two tiles on a simple 4x4 grid. When you move the tiles in any of the cardinal directions, matching numbers combine to form a single tile with their sum value (2 merges with 2 to form 4, 4 with 4 to form 8, and so on).
Our team values 2048 Classic for its elegant balance of simplistic mechanics and profound logical depth. It serves as an excellent brain trainer, teaching pattern recognition, long-term path planning, and risk management. Reaching the legendary 2048 tile requires careful positioning, smart board management, and preventing high-value tiles from getting trapped in the center.
Press the Arrow keys or swipe the screen to shift the tiles. Each shift spawns a new '2' or '4' tile in one of the empty grid cells.
Push matching numbers directly into one another to double their value. Focus on merging smaller numbers early to clear space.
Keep merging higher tiles together. Plan your slides carefully to build up to 256, 512, 1024, and finally the legendary 2048 tile!
Designate one corner (the bottom-right is a favorite) to hold your largest number. Only slide Down and Right as much as possible to keep it firmly anchored in place.
Arrange your other high-value tiles in descending order leading away from your corner. This sets up smooth, cascading merges that won't block the board.
Unless you have absolutely no other move, avoid swiping Up. Swiping Up pulls your high corner tile out of its anchor, allowing a small '2' or '4' to spawn underneath it and block your setup.
| Supported Devices | Chromebook, PC, Mac, iPad, iPhone, Android tablets & phones |
| Grid Format | Standard 4x4 matrix grid |
| Controls | Keyboard Arrows, WASD, Swipe Gestures |
| Highest Possible Tile | 131,072 (Theoretical maximum on a 4x4 grid) |
While tile spawns (either 2 or 4) are randomized, the game is heavily based on skill and planning. A player with a solid corner strategy can consistently win, whereas random swiping will quickly lock up the grid.
Reaching 2048 triggers a victory screen. However, you can select 'Keep going' to continue merging and strive for higher milestones like 4096, 8192, and beyond.
The classic, authentic edition of 2048 does not feature an undo button. Every slide is permanent, which makes strategic placement and cautious planning vital.
